The Diplomatic Conference for the Establishment of International Conven tions for the Protection of Victims of War, convened by the Swiss Federal Council, as trustee of the Geneva Conventions, was held in Geneva from April 21 to August 12, 1949 Of the sixty-three Governments represented at the Conference, fifty-nine had sent plenipotentiaries; four sent observers only. Representatives of the International Committee were invited to participate in the capacity of experts. After four months of continuous debate, the Conference established the fol lowing four Conventions, which are given below: I. Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded and Sick in Armed Forces in the Field, of August 12, 1949. II. Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of Wounded, Sick and Shipwrecked Members of Armed Forces at Sea, of August 12, 1949. III. Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, of August 12, 1949. IV. Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, of August 12, 1949.
