Yoshio Sugimoto (born December 7, 1939) is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia). He earned his B.A. in Law and Politics from Kyoto University in 1964, then worked as a staff writer for Mainichi Shimbun before moving to the U.S. for doctoral studies. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973. His research centers on Japanese society, emphasizing cultural diversity, social stratification, and challenging the homogenizing model of Japanese identity. Sugimoto has held key roles, including founding director of the Japanese Studies Centre at Monash University, and his book An Introduction to Japanese Society is now in its fifth edition, widely used in sociological studies of Japan.
